Jennifer Johnson Buchanan is native of Seat Pleasant, Maryland. She began her training at the age of two at Incarnation Dance Studio in Washington, DC under the direction of Katherine H. Duffey and Lottie G. Bennett.
She has trained with Brenda Jorden, Joyce Mosso, Lynn Welters, Saundra Fortune-Green, Susan Eidson, Carol Foster just to name of few. She also has had training outside of the DMV area with NADAA and it’s various dance instructors in NYC, NJ, PA, MD, NC, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and Broadway Dance Center in NYC. Mrs. Buchanan was a member of the BrenCar Dancers, The Jazzettes, Joyce Mattison Dance Company, Laverne Reed Dancers, Terpsichorean Dance Company, UDC Dance Company, Taps & Company and the Old Town Hoofers.
Mrs. Buchanan is the former owner/director of Umoja Creative Dance Studio from 1995-2005. She gave up her dream to continue to raise her two boys Christopher, the artist, and Aeron, the dancer. After closing UCDS, Mrs. Buchanan has continued to teach on a limited basis. In January 2016 she became the Dance Instructor at the University of the District of Columbia.
Cristine Davis: Owner & Director, Ballet, Tap, & Jazz
Cristine Davis is a native of Pittsburgh, PA. She began her dance training at the age of three at Studio G Dance Center under the direction of Val Gaydos.
Davis was a member of the Pittsburgh-based Xpressions Contemporary Dance Company directed by Staycee Pearl from 2002-2006 where she performed works by Robert Battle, Darrel Crown Moultrie, and Kyle Abraham and danced in productions with Pittsburgh Opera, Shona Sharif African Drum and Dance Ensemble, and others.
In 2006, Davis joined Full of Grace, Inc. (FOG) to begin the Full of Grace School of Dance where she served as its Principal Dance Instructor from 2006-2010 and developed its pre-professional troupe. In the DC area, Davis was an instructor at the Oxendine Performing Arts Academy in Hyattsville, MD prior to beginning District Dance Arts. She is currently the leader of the Selah! dance ministry at The Bridge church in Silver Spring, MD.
Cristine is a professionally certified dance instructor through Dance Masters of America, Inc., the Cecchetti Council of America, and is a member of the National Dance Education Organization. She holds a BA in English Writing from the University of Pittsburgh and a MA in Arts Management from the H. John Heinz III College of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University.
Natasha Hawkins: Hip Hop
Natasha Hawkins began dancing at the age of four in Washington, DC, building her foundation of many dance forms at the RJV School of Dance.
Through high school, Natasha graced the stage in numerous productions at DC venues such as Dance Place and the Dance Institute of Washington. Natasha then left the area to attend the University of Delaware where she was the president of the on-campus organization, Dark Arts Performing Dance Company, where they focused on dance forms ranging from hip hop to ballet.
Upon returning to DC, she immediately immersed herself back into the dance scene, performing with Life, Rhythm, Move Project (LRMP) and Expansion Dance Project at the Kennedy Center, the National Theater, the White House, and the Atlas Theater. Natasha was also the director of Joy of Motion’s resident Adult Hip Hop Company, DCypher Dance, where she led the company to multiple performances at community events, night clubs, and international stages.
Natasha has trained with both local and national talent including Aysha Upchurch, Tony Czar, Neil Schwartz, Jared Jenkins, Jason Anderson, and many others. Natasha continues to train and teach at various dance studios in the Washington, DC area.
Debbie Jones: Zumba
Debbie is a licensed Zumba® instructor who fuses her passions for dance, wellness and travel to create a festive, fun, fitness class. She has a passion to help others achieve their fitness goals.
Debbie began her dance training at the University of Maryland and continued by attending several dance schools throughout the Washington, DC area. She enjoys experiencing different cultures through participating in Zumba carnival troupes and dancing or performing salsa, bachata, and west African dance.
Sydney Parker: Ballet
A native of Prince George’s County MD, Miss Sydney began dance lessons at Les Cher Classical Cecchetti Ballet Academy at the age of six. She continued graded ballet instruction at this Academy through her senior year of high school, while receiving her Professional Elementary V certificate under the Cecchetti Council of America.
She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance with a concentration in performance and choreography from The University of Maryland in 2016. While at The University of Maryland, she performed in various student and Faculty concerts, including her own choreography. She also had the privilege to present work at The American College Dance Festival in 2015.
Sydney has taught for Variations Incorporated Dance Solutions, Connect The Dots Dance Company, and has recently accepted a Modern Dance/Choreography and Creative Movement instructor position at The Georgetown Day School.
