Class Levels

DDA’s curriculum progresses a dancer from beginner to advanced. Ballet classes follow Cecchetti Council of America curriculum, and Jazz and tap classes are based on Dance Masters of America, Inc.’s curriculum.

  • Pre-Ballet & Pre-Tap (recommended ages: 4-5)
  • Primary 1 (recommended ages: 5-7)
  • Primary 2 (recommended ages: 7-9)
  • Primary 3: (recommended ages: 8-10)
  • Ballet Grades 1 & 2
  • Level 1 (minimum age 9yrs.)
  • Level 2

At our studio, “levels” are sets of skills, abilities, and concepts in each style of dance that increase in complexity as a student progresses from a beginner to an advanced dancer. A level is not a year or any set amount of time.

Beginning dancers are placed in Primary level classes, and dancers may be referred to a class based on age. However, age is just a placement recommendation, and dancers may be referred to another level based on their ability to understand and perform the curriculum. A dancer’s maturity, attitude, commitment, and work ethic also factor into class placement. For example, a young dancer who is physically capable of handling advanced work may not yet have the maturity to handle the rigor and expectations of advanced classes.

While age is just a placement recommendation, there is no set amount of time that a dancer will stay at each level. When teachers observe that a dancer has become strong and confident in the skills they are learning at their current level, teachers will recommend dancers for advancement.

If you are unsure of what level might be best for your dancer, please contact us to discuss and set up a trial class. Please also refer to the class descriptions for recommended ages and dance experience required at each level.
